GFWC/CT TV Program on Vets OASIS  Summer 2011

Welcome to the World of Vets OASIS. ? a place on Connecticut Public College Campuses to welcome home our Veterans.

Yes, a place where we as a Community can show our Military men and women appreciation for their service to our Country in time of war.

What better place, what better time to become involved directly with our Service men and women and to let them know we believe in them and want to help them return successfully into civilian life.

And who better knows civilian life than we, the women of the Community. Indeed, we are the Community.

Too much, you say. Too busy? Are not the young people of our Community giving much to protect us? Have they not been busy, risking life and limb to keep us secure?

Yes, they have, and we must find the way to thank them. Vets OASIS is the way.

A brief history is in order. Recognizing the need our homecoming veterans have in readjusting from a war combat zone to a safe civilian environment, the State Governor?s Office, the Connecticut Veterans Association and the Chancellors of our Public Colleges and Universities met and asked our returning veterans how we in the community can help them transition into civilian life. They responded and told us that after serving in a war combat zone for several years in Military Service, they yearn for a safe community environment to gather among themselves, meet each other face to face, to discuss their experiences, their struggles and plan to find suitable ways to reenter society.

From that meeting came the concept of forming areas on College Campuses to encourage our veterans to socially get together, to tryout their ideas and to plan their transition back into civilian life. Would it be going back to school? Would it be looking for work? Would it be raising a family or starting a business? Only they would know what they want to do.

But they would need help. And that is where we in the community come in. We can help create a welcoming place for our Veterans in areas that the Colleges provide. We could help furnish and decorate these areas. We could raise funds to donate to these areas. We could meet with the veterans and personally welcome them back from the war.

We could let them know we appreciate what they have endured and thank them.

We, the women of the Community can do that. We can work jointly as Woman?s organizations to combine our talents, our efforts to accomplish just that. We are a philanthropic community service organization. Vets OASIS is the way.

Your Club President received information on how to contact the Colleges in your area. You could get together with other Clubs in your District if you like, to determine what to do and how to proceed. If you choose to be hands-on in your effort call the Vets OASIS Committee and let them know. They will call the College of your choice and arrange for a visit. After seeing the site and deciding how you would like to help, the Committee will work with you and the College in seeing what needs to be done.
