GFWC Southington Woman's Club Inc
is a member of General Federaton of Women's Club of CT (GFWC/CT)
and General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC). Among the
many charities we support with our fund raising activities
are the United Way of Southington,Bradley Memorial
Hospital, Bread for Life, Friends of the So. Public
Library, So. Park & Recreation (Panthorn Park), and
many more. We have just donated $1,000.00 to the
Southington Library for new chairs. To celebrate the 1990
centennial of the GFWC International we raised $10,000.00
to beautify and rename a park becoming identified as
"GFWC CENTENNIAL PARK" a source of community
pride.
In 1997 we published a book titled "SOUTHINGTON'S
SCULPTURE AND OTHER INTERESTING LEGACIES".
The restoration of the Soldier's Monument on the town
green and the Rochambeau Monument in Marion was
facilitated in 2000. It was culminated with a rededication
of the Soldier's Monument on Memorial Day and a
rededication of the Rochambeau Monument of July 4, 2000.
We raised over $12,000 toward this project.
This year we are sponsoring an essay contest for
students living in the Town of Southington in grades 4 and
5. The title of the contest is "Discover
Southington's Treasures, Write" The winner in each
grade will be awarded a $50.00 savings bond.
We also participate in presenting two high school
scholarships. Through the State Federation, the club
donates to the art contest for high school seniors and the
Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) program for high
school sophomores.
We participate in Operation Smile by making smile bags
and hospital gowns.
Our monthly meetings are held the third Thursday,
September through May at the Plantsville Congregational
Church in Plantsville.
