NOTE
FROM INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT
JACQUELYN PIERCE
Dear Fellow Club Members,
The month of February is quickly approaching and,
to a GFWC club member, thoughts of valentine hearts
and GFWC reporting come to mind. As you are
preparing for your club meeting in February,
consider making this a health awareness meeting by
informing members about the leading cause of death
among women in the United States: heart disease.
I encourage you to focus on hearts in February:
- Request that your fellow club members wear red
at at your February meeting in recognition of
the
National
Wear Red Day on
February 1, sponsored by Heart
Truth. On
that day, GFWC will again be represented at the
Red Dress Collection 2008 Fashion Show in New York
City.
Include an article in your club or state
newsletter reminding members that the leading
cause of death in women in the United States is
heart disease. More women die of heart disease
each year than die of all types of cancer
combined. Only 13 percent of women are even
aware that heart disease is the number one
killer of American women. Almost 500,000
women lose their lives to heart disease
annually.
The good news is that heart disease is the most
preventable cause of death in women. Heart
disease prevention is easy, if you follow a few
simple tips:
Don’t smoke, or, if you do, quit.
Exercise, exercise, exercise.
Eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy
weight.
Use alcohol only in moderation.
Realizing that stress is extremely bad for one’s
health and that reporting for GFWC might well lead
to some frustration, I encourage you to follow the
guidelines for online reporting
that were mailed to every club president
on jumbo postcards. Be sure to also refer to your
state guidelines so that all reporting will be done
in a timely fashion and that due recognition can be
given to your fellow club members.
Yours, in Federation Service,

Jacquelyn Pierce
GFWC International President

WHO IS A PART OF GFWC HISTORY?
GFWC recently learned of two clubwomen
in the Highland (Ill.) Woman's Club whose volunteer
service extends for more than a half century
each. One of these dedicated clubwomen has been
a member since 1952, the other joined GFWC
in 1934!
This got us wondering—who might be our
longest-serving GFWC member? If you or a
fellow clubwoman has a strong (and
long!) record of service, let us know! Send the
member's name, club name, and the number of years of
continual service to GFWC Membership Director Debbe
Gladstone.
And look for an update on our longest-serving member
in a future article.

NEW CHAIRMAN FOR GFWC COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT
CONTEST
GFWC International President Jackie Pierce has
appointed clubwoman Pat Swan to serve the rest
of the 2006-2008 administration as Chairman of the
Community Improvement Contest. Pat is past president
of GFWC Georgia and currently serves as
Vice-President of the GFWC Southern Region, so this
beloved GFWC contest is in very capable
hands.
To assist Pat in managing the contest, GFWC
asks that state presidents e-mail the name, mailing
address, and e-mail address of their state Community
Improvement Contest chairmen to Pat Swan at sbp6388@aol.com
and to GFWC Program Director Pat Nolan at pnolan@gfwc.org.
Once a
complete list is compiled, they will send updates on
the Community Improvement Contest to the state
chairmen.

GET A LITTLE HELP WITH YOUR ONLINE REPORTING
GFWC is thrilled that online reporting will be
available beginning Friday, January 18, 2008. We
also know that the process of reporting online
can be intimidating, so we've made plans to help
members understand the online reporting technology
and learn the HOWs and WHYs of online reporting.
On February 8, 9, and 10, GFWC will offer
webinars to discuss the new online
reporting process. A webinar is like a
conference call, except that it's hosted on the
Internet and allows you to watch while you listen!
Stay tuned for more information about how to sign up
for one of these information webinars so that you
can join us in the online reporting revolution!

GFWC Headquarters was a vision of purple on
Tuesday, October 9, for the GFWC Domestic Violence
Observance Reception. GFWC national, state, and club
domestic violence chairmen came to Headquarters to
assist as hosts. Sincere gratitude is extended to:
Linda Boyd and Margo Barr from Florida
Cathie Ryan and Johnnie Ruth Sturgeon from
Louisiana
Barbara Nunnari and Mary Thompson from Maryland
Carol White from Nevada
Shirley Holly and Mary Ellen Brock from New
Jersey
Kathy Canzano from New York
Lana Robinson from Tennessee
These dedicated individuals transformed the
entryway of GFWC Headquarters, which is currently
undergoing refurbishment, into a dramatic statement;
decorated the dining room with fresh purple flowers,
linens, and candles; and served a delicious array of
foods and beverages. A big thank you also goes to
Julia Gibbs of Maryland, who donated delightful
purple ribbon sugar cookies as a departing favor for
guests.
During the reception’s program Mary Alice
Williams, CNN founder and anchor, gave the keynote
speech, and Sue Else, President of the National
Network to End Domestic Violence, and Sheryl Cates,
President of the National Domestic Violence Hotline,
received plaques of appreciation from GFWC. Regional
representatives from Chico’s and My Sister’s
Place also received recognition from GFWC for their
participation in the Chico’s
Wardrobe Parties,
which are currently being sponsored by GFWC at Chico’s
stores nationwide. Kiersten Stewart, director of
public policy at the Family Violence Prevention
Fund, and Rita Smith, executive director at the
National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, were
also present to express their support of GFWC.
Representation by 14 states and 28 clubs was
provided to applaud the awarding of 20 $100 grants
to clubs nationwide in honor of Make A Difference
Day. And, proudly displayed as guests entered the
reception area, was the U.S. President George W.
Bush’s Proclamation for October 2007 as Domestic
Violence Awareness Month.
The reception concluded with all present signing
pledge cards for the A
Million Voices Against Domestic Violence in America
joint campaign between the National Domestic
Violence Hotline and GFWC. Yes—it was indeed a
vision of purple!

Make
A Difference Day
-
Saturday, October 27, 2007
Calling all clubs! Saturday, October 27, 2007, is
"Make a Difference Day," the largest
national day of helping others, and clubs are
encouraged to participate by sponsoring a domestic
violence awareness project or program. "Make A
Difference Day" is sponsored by USA WEEKEND
magazine and its 600 carrier newspapers. It is held in
partnership with the Points of Light Foundation and is
supported by the Newman’s Own Foundation, which
provides $10,000 donations to charities selected by
each of the 10 national honorees. This is a great
opportunity for an ACT in OCT recruitment activity, so
get busy and plan your club’s project/program, then
report the following information to Nanwhite123@aol.com
by November 1, 2007.
- What did your club do on Saturday, October 27,
2007, for "Make a Difference Day?"
- How many clubwomen and others volunteered on your
project/program?
- How many people do you believe were helped and/or
educated through your project/program?
Please include your club’s name, mailing address,
phone number, and a contact person with your
submission. All clubs participating with receive a
"Make a Difference Day" certificate of
appreciation. Information about the various projects
and programs will be compiled and submitted to USA
WEEKEND magazine and other national news media. Don’t
forget to get local news coverage for your event!
Again, we want 100% club participation!
1734 Entryway
Project
The renovations have begun! Thanks to members,
clubs, state federations, and regions, GFWC has
embarked on a much-needed project to update and
renovate the entryway of GFWC Headquarters at 1734 N
Street. We anticipate the grand unveiling at our GFWC
Holiday Reception on December 5, and we hope that you
will consider joining us for some holiday cheer and a
first look at the new and improved entrance. We will
continue to accept donations towards this project
through October 31, 2007, and if you, your club, or
your state are still interested in making a gift,
please contact GFWC Executive Director Natasha Kalteis
at nkalteis@gfwc.org
or 202/347-3168. We will look forward to welcoming all
GFWC members to their Headquarters home!
